Independence

I was able to work from home today. In doing so, I was able to drive my sons to school. It’s a simple thing, but something I love doing. Five minutes on a weekday morning, uninterrupted - when I’d usually be on the train.
Typically, when we pull up at school, several older kids are assigned the task of walking the younger kids to their respective lines. This morning, Pete would have none of it. I opened the car door, he put on his backpack, looked up at that big 7th grader and said, “I’m Pre-K, but I know where to go.” and bolted by her yelling “Bye Dad!”
Now part of me sees this as troublesome - that my kids are old enough to not need me - or anyone for that matter. But the bigger part of me is proud as hell. He wasn’t scared. He knew where he needed to go and he went there.
